What can a personal loan be used for?

Common reasons South Africans take out a personal loan.

A personal loan from a registered South African credit provider is unsecured credit — you can use it for almost any lawful purpose. Here are the reasons we see most often on applications submitted through LoanSearch:

Debt consolidation

Combine multiple higher-interest balances — credit cards, store accounts, overdrafts — into a single personal loan with one predictable monthly instalment.

Home improvements

Fund renovations, solar or inverter installation, a new roof, borehole, or anything else that upgrades your home without refinancing your bond.

Vehicle purchase or repairs

Cover a deposit, buy out a used car, or pay for unexpected mechanical repairs that insurance won't settle.

Education & tuition

Pay registration or fees for yourself or a family member when NSFAS or other study funding doesn't close the gap.

Medical expenses

Cover procedures, dental work, specialist visits, or scripts not fully covered by your medical aid.

Weddings & life events

Spread the cost of a wedding, funeral, or major family event over a manageable repayment term.

Emergency expenses

Handle unexpected costs — appliance breakdowns, urgent travel, load-shedding solutions — without draining savings.

Relocation & deposits

Pay a rental deposit, moving costs, or a month's rent in advance when you start a new job or move provinces.

LoanSearch does not approve loans or set interest rates. The credit provider you're matched with will make its own affordability assessment in line with section 81 of the National Credit Act before making you an offer.

Who can apply

Personal loan eligibility in South Africa.

Each South African credit provider sets its own approval criteria, but the baseline requirements below are common across the market. Meeting them doesn't guarantee approval — providers still conduct a full affordability assessment under the National Credit Act.

You'll generally need to be:

  • Aged 18 years or older
  • A South African citizen or permanent resident
  • Employed, self-employed, or earning a verifiable monthly income
  • In possession of a valid South African ID or ID document
  • Holder of a South African bank account where your income is deposited
  • Not currently under debt review

Providers typically want to see:

  • Stable recent income (typically 3+ months of payslips or bank statements)
  • A manageable level of existing debt relative to your income
  • A history of meeting contractual obligations on existing credit
  • Enough disposable income after expenses to comfortably afford the new instalment
  • A valid contact number and email address for the provider to reach you

Consumers currently under debt review in terms of section 86 of the National Credit Act generally cannot take out new unsecured credit until the debt review is terminated or rescinded. If you are under debt review, you can still submit an enquiry, but providers may not be able to assist at this time.

FAQ

Common questions about applying for a personal loan in South Africa.

How do I apply for a personal loan through LoanSearch?

Fill in a short online application with your contact details, employment, income range, and the loan amount you need. We share your enquiry with suitable South African credit providers, who may contact you directly with an offer. There is no cost to you for submitting an enquiry.

How much can I borrow with a personal loan in South Africa?

Personal loan amounts on the South African market typically range from around R8,000 up to R350,000, depending on the provider and your affordability assessment. The amount you can actually borrow will be set by the credit provider after reviewing your income, expenses, and existing credit obligations.

What interest rate will I pay on a personal loan?

Interest rates on unsecured personal loans in South Africa are capped by the National Credit Act at the SARB repo rate plus 21% per year, plus other regulated fees. Actual rates vary by provider and risk profile — prime-tier applicants can typically see rates from around 15% APR, while higher-risk applicants pay closer to the cap.

How long does a personal loan application take to be approved?

Once a credit provider receives your application from LoanSearch, approval timelines typically range from the same day to two business days. If they approve you, funds are usually paid into your bank account within 24 to 48 hours of you signing the credit agreement.

What documents do I need to apply for a personal loan?

The initial LoanSearch enquiry does not require documents. If a credit provider decides to proceed with your application, they will typically request a copy of your South African ID, three months of payslips or bank statements, and proof of residential address to complete their affordability assessment.

Can I get a personal loan with bad credit in South Africa?

It depends. Applicants with a poor credit history generally have fewer options and pay higher interest rates. Some specialist credit providers on our panel do consider applicants with impaired credit, provided there is clear evidence of affordability. Consumers currently under debt review, however, cannot legally take out new unsecured credit until the debt review is lifted.

Can I apply if I am self-employed?

Yes. Self-employed applicants can submit an enquiry. Credit providers will typically ask for recent bank statements showing regular income and may request additional documents such as financial statements or SARS tax certificates as part of their affordability assessment.

Will applying affect my credit score?

Submitting an enquiry through LoanSearch does not trigger a credit-bureau check. A credit enquiry is only recorded against your profile when a credit provider performs a formal credit check in order to make you an offer. You will be informed before that happens.

Is LoanSearch a credit provider or a bank?

No. LoanSearch is a personal loan comparison and lead-referral service. We are not a credit provider, a bank, or a financial services provider. Any loan is issued by a registered South African credit provider that reviews your application under the National Credit Act, 34 of 2005.

Is my personal information kept private?

Yes. Your information is handled in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). We only share your details with credit providers you have consented to be contacted by. You can withdraw consent, request a copy of your data, or request deletion at any time by emailing [email protected].

Do you charge a fee to use LoanSearch?

No. Using LoanSearch is completely free for consumers. We're paid by credit providers only when an enquiry we refer converts into a signed loan agreement. Any interest, initiation fees, or service fees on your loan will come only from the credit provider you ultimately sign with.

Can I apply if I am currently under debt review?

Under South African law, consumers under debt review generally cannot take out new unsecured credit until the debt review is terminated or rescinded. If you are under debt review, credit providers on our panel will typically not be able to assist with a new personal loan at this time.
